Boy

Boy is a movie about a young kid named Boy who has recently been reconnected with his father after the death of his mother. In the beginning of the movie, we can see him taking on the role of a care giver because of the way he had to take care of his younger family members while no one else was around. This makes me think that since his mother died, he does not have a great role model or someone that he can look up to and talk to when he needs to. That changes when his dad comes into town looking for some money and Boy starts to hang out with him. We can see him change throughout the movie from a sweet boy who helps take care of his family to a jerk who could no care less. You would think that he would not want to become that because of the adults that were in, or not in the case, his life. Boy was looking for someone to identify with because he was lost on who he was.

Throughout this movie we can see that Boy has to grow up quickly. One example of this is when he is taking care of his family instead of there being an adult around to take care of all of them. This can make him feel as if he is older than he is, which made it easier for him to become like his dad. Since he was in this mindset that he was older he thought following his dad was the thing to do. Especially while he is trying to gain his approval since he has been gone so long. Another example of this is when he sees him drinking and smoking at a very young age, but this is because he has seen his father do it. While his father is not a child, he almost has the mentality of a child, which makes it easier for Boy to look up to him and want to be like him. After his visits, his mother at her grave his attitude towards his father begins to change. He also comes to terms with the fact that his father is only there for the money and will probably leave after he gets what he needs.

Boy realizes that his father is not who he wants him to be. He comes to terms with his father leaving them and sees him for what he really is, especially after Boy realizes that his father only came back to them because of the money he had left. This makes Boy turn back into the boy he was before his father arrived. We can see this at the end when all the children are helping to pick up the house and hide the evidence of destruction that had happened there. Once Boy was able to be real with his father, he was able to see that who he was becoming was not who he wanted to be. It had to be a struggle for him to do that but at the end of the day it helps him more then it would harm him, and that is just another part of growing up.

The choices that Boy had to make throughout the movie shows how he changes with decisions he makes. It also shows how he finds himself through trial and error because of what the choices he makes. We see him as himself in the beginning and then turn into a version of him that he thought he wanted to be. When he saw that the people who were there for him before his father showed up look at him differently is when he decided to make a change in the way he was acting. Especially after the way he saw his father after finding out he was not there for him, but the money instead. I am happy with the way that this ended because he found himself again. It also does a good job at showing how out interactions with others can mold and shape us to the people that we will become. Even if they don’t always go back to the person that they were before.
